| abiotic factors | the physical and chemical characteristics of the environment |
| tolerance curve | a graph of performance versus values of an environmental variable (ex temperature) |
| acclimation | adjustment of tolerance to abiotic factors through this proccess |
| conformers | organisms that do not regulate their internal conditions, change with their environmental changes the internal conditions of a conformer remain within the optimal range as long as environmental conditions remain within that range |
| regulators | organisms that use energy to control some of thier internal conditions |
| dormacy | a long term strategy to escape from unsuitable conditions such as winter or drought is to enter to a state of reduced activity |
| migration | to move to a more favorable habitat, usually a seasonal thing |
| niche | the specific role, or way of life, of an organism is within its environment. the range of conditions the species can tolerate, the resources it needs, the methods it obtains them by, number of offspring, reproduction time, and all other interactions |
| generalists | species with broad niches that can tolerate a range of conditions and use a variety of resources |
| specialists | species that have narrow niches that only feed on one or two specific foods |
