Amino Acid The monomer that forms proteins.
Atom Basic unit of matter.
Carbohydrate Compound made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms that is a major source of energy.
Catalyst A substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the reaction.
Compound A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions.
Covalent Bonds A bond formed by the sharing of electrons.
Electron Negatively charged subatomic particles.
Element Substance consisting of entirely one type of atom.
Ionic Bond Bond formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Ions An atom with a positive or negative charge.
Isotopes Atom of an element that has a number of neutrons different from other atoms of the same element.
Lipid Macromolecules made mainly from carbon and hydrogen atoms; includes fats oils and waxes.
Molecule Smallest unit of most compounds.
Monomer small unit that can joint together with other small units to form polymers.
Nucleic Acid Macro-molecule containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus.
Nucleotide Monomer of nucleic acids made up of a five carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.
Polymer Large compound formed from combinations of many monomers.
Protein Needed by the body for growth and repair and to make up enzymes.
Reactant Element or compound that enters into a chemical reaction.
Substrate Reactant of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction.
Endothermic Reaction A chemical reaction that absorbs heat from the environment.
Exothermic Reaction A chemical reaction that releases heat.
Enzyme A protein that acts as a biological catalyst.
