Biome large geographic areas with similar climates and ecosystems
Flora plant life
Fauna animal life
Terrestrial living on the land
Aquatic living in or on the water
Permafrost permanently frozen soil
Coniferous cone bearing trees with needle-like leaves typically found in the Taiga biome
Deciduous broad leaf trees that drop their leaves in the fall and go into a state of dormancy during the winter and typically found in the Temperate biome
Dormancy a state of inactivity for deciduous trees during winter months
Estivation a state of inactivity for animals that live in hot, dry areas such as a desert
Nocturnal active at night
Canopy the cover formed by the leafy branches of trees in a forest
Tundra Biome cold, dry, treeless biome located in extreme northern areas that receive very little precipitation
Taiga Biome cold biome located south of the tundra that experiences long winters with the major flora being coniferous trees
Temperate Biome biome with 4 distinctive seasons, rich soil and scattered with deciduous trees
Savanna Biome biome with dry and rainy seasons whose major flora are grasses and major fauna are large herbivores
Desert Biome extremely hot biome with limited precipitation and sandy soil
Tropical Rainforest Biome extremely wet biome with fairly constant temperatures that contains many large leafed flora and a large variety of fauna
Marine Biome biome that consists of very large bodies of water with a high salt content that contains 4 zones
Estuary biome where fresh water and marine biomes merge; very shallow area that is high in nutrients and contains water with medium range salt content
Freshwater biome that consists of rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds with extremely low salt content
