Chapter 4
| word | definition |
|---|---|
| exponential growth | as a population gets larger, it also grows at a faster rate |
| carrying capacity | the number of organisms that an environment can support indefinitely |
| life-history pattern | factor that determines population growth- an organisms reproductive pattern |
| density-dependent factors | include disease, competition, predators, parasites and food. these factors have an increasing effect as populations increase |
| density-independent factors | can effect populations regardless of their density. factors are abiotic factors such as volcanic eruptions, termperature, storms, floods, drought, chemical pesticides and major habitat disruption |
| demography | the study of human population size, density and distribution, movement, and its birth and death rates |
| birthrate | number of live birthsper 1000 population in a given year |
| death rate | number of deaths per 1000 population in a given year |
| double timing | time needed for a population to double in size |
| age structure | proportions of population that are in different age structures |
