| body cavities | spaces within the body that contain, protect, seperate, and support internal organs. |
| cranial cavity | space inside the skull that hold the brain |
| veretebral/spinal cavity | formed by bones of the vertebral column contains spinal cord. (backbone) |
| thoracic cavity | known as the chest cavity, bottom border is the diaphragm, contains 3 smaller cavities.pericardial, 2 pleural, mediastinum cavities |
| pericardial cavity | surrounds the heart, located within the pericardium. |
| pleural cavities | surrounds the lungs, there are 2 of them. |
| mediastinum | the space between the lungs, that contains the heart, esophagus, treachea and several large blood vessels. |
| abdominopelvic cavity | has an upper and lower portion. Upper contains the stomach liver, small intestines, most of large intestines. Lower contains the urinary bladder and reproductive organs and rectum. |
