Key Terms for Ch. 28

QuestionAnswer
Nutrients Atoms and molecules that organisms obtain from their living or nonliving environment and that are required for survival.
Trophic Level Feeding level.
Primary Consumers Feed directly and exclusively on producers, the most abundant living energy source in any ecosystem.
Secondary Consumers Carnivores that prey on herbivores.
Net Primary Production The energy that photosynthetic organisms store and make available to other members of the community over a given period.
Estuaries Coastal areas where rivers meet the ocean, carrying nutrients washed from the land.
Food Web Many interconnecting food chains.
Detritus Feeders An army of mostly small and often unnoticed organisms, including certain mites and protists, nematode worms, earthworms, centipedes, and some insects and snails.
Energy Pyramid Shows maximum energy available at the base and steadily diminishing amounts at higher levels, illustrates the general energy relationships between trophic levels.
Acid Deposition Acid rain.
