Chapter 1 KAIS
parts of central nervous system
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| central nervous system | brain and spinal cord make up CNS |
| spinal cord | bottom region of CNS; inside middle of back |
| brain | inside your skull; made up of billions of tiny nerve fibers |
| brainstem | above spinal cord; get info. and sends out signals |
| cerebellum | back of brain;fine tunes muscle movements |
| hypothalamus | controls thirst, appetite and temp. of body |
| thalamus | above hypothalamus; receives signals from lower body and sends info. to upper parts |
| cerebral hemispheres | 2 halves of brain connected by millions of nerve fibers |
| Left hemisphere | controls language and info. that comes in and goes in a sequence; works fast |
| Right hemisphere | controls visual patterns like someone's face; works slower |
| frontal lobes | lets you find and use the correct brain part for what you're doing |
| parietal lobes | helps figure out what different sensations mean and what they do |
| sensory cortex | receives info. about your eyes, ears, skin and sense of smell |
| motor cortex | located at the back of each frontal lobe; motor cortex in right hemi. controls left side of body and motor cortex in left hemi. controls right side |
| occipital lobe | behind parietal lobe; helps you understand info. coming in through eyes |
| temporal lobes | beneath parietal lobes; deals with language coming in through ears |
| basal ganglia | groups of nerves that work with cerebellum to make muscles work smoothly |
