Class Benzodiazapine, anti-anxiety, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, sedative
Description Benzo sedative and muscle relaxant that reduces tremors, induces amnesia, and reduces the recurrence of seizures, acts on limbic, thalamic, and hypothalamic regions to potentate the effects of inhibitory neurotransmitters, raising the seizure threshold
Indications major motor seizures, status epilepticus, muscle tremors due to injury, acute anxiety, premedication prior to cardioversion
Onset/Duration 1-5 min; 15min-1 hour
Contraindications hypersensitivity, coma, shock, depressed vital signs, neonates, shock, acute alcoholism, OB patients
Adverse Reactions hypotension, reflex tachycardia, respiratory depression, ataxia, psychomotor impairment, confusion, nausea
Precautions Addiction, depression, COPD, myasthenia gravis, elderly or very ill patients, psychoses, hepatic or renal failure, Due to short half-life of the drug, seizures may recur
Dosage/Route Seizure 5-10mg IV/IM adult, Pedi 0.5-2mg IV/IM; Acute Anxiety 2-5mg IV/IM; premedication 5-15mg IV, Pedi 0.2-0.5mg/kg IV
