Chapter 1 of Bio

Cells

QuestionAnswer
Name the 12 components of cell 1. Cell membrane 2. Cytoplasm 3. Nucleus 4. Mitochondria 5. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum 6. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum 7. Vacuole 8. Centriole 9. Ribosomes 10. Golgi Apparatus 11. Cell Wall 12. Chloroplast
Function of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes synthesize proteins for transport out of the cell
Function of Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Synthesize fats and steroids and detoxify harmful substances into harmless substances
Function of mitochondria Provide energy for cell activities through aerobic respiration
Function of Golgi Apparatus Modifies and repackage substances produce by Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum into vesicle to be exported out of the cell
The differences between plant cell and animal cell 1. Centriole is absent in plant cell 2. Cell wall and chloroplasts are absent in the animal cell 3. Vacuoles are small in the animal cells and it stores water and food temporarily. Vacuole is big in the plants cells and it contains cell sap and minera
How does the structure of the root hair cell allow it to absorb more efficiently ? It is long and narrow to increase the total surface area for absorption
How does the structure of the xylem vessels allow it to conduct and support more efficiently? It has lignin deposits to strengthen the wall and prevent vessels from collapsing. The hollow lumen also allows water to be conducted more quickly
How does the structure of the red blood cell allow it to transport oxygen more efficiently ? It has a circular biconcave shape which allows oxygen to diffuse in and out of the cell more quickly
