Enzymes for Bio
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Catalyst | lowers the activation energy of a reaction |
| enzyme | biological catalyst; protein |
| structure of an enzyme | 3D, proteins, tertiary(quaternary) gives the enzyme activity; has an active site and allosteric site |
| active site | where the substrates bond on an enzyme |
| allosteric site | the part of the enzyme that the substrates do not bond; any non catalytic site |
| How does the cell regulate enzyme activity? | It only produces the enzyme when need; and some enzymes need allosteric activation before the enzyme will do its job; regulator protein at allosteric site inactivates enzyme |
| What else effects enzyme activity? | Temperature (works best around 37 degrees C), pH, and enzyme and substrate concentration, other chemicals can inhibit enzymes |
| Competitive Inhibition | competing for active site; is temporary |
| non-competetive inhibition | something bonds to alosteric site and changes form of enzyme where substrates cant get in- temporary |
| irreverable Inhibition | when one permanently bonds |
