QuestionAnswer
what is endoplasmic reticulum? the organelle that transports proteins around the cell.
what is a nucleus? a large organelle in a eukaryotic cell that contains the cell's DNA, chromosomes, and genetic material.
what are lysosomes? the organelle that digests food particles, wastes, cell parts, and foreign invaders.
what is a golgi body? the organelle that packages proteins before they leave the cell.
what is a vacuole? the organelle that stores water and other materials.
what are ribosomes? organelles that make proteins.
what is a cytoplasm? the fluid, jelly-like substance that fills the cell.
what is a nucleolus? the dark area of the nucleus which stores materials that will be used to make ribosomes.
what is mitochondria? the organelles that break down food and sugar to release energy.
what are chromosomes? structures in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells made of DNA.
what is a cell membrane? a protective layer that covers the cell's surface and controls what moves in and out of the cell.
what is a cell wall? a structure that surrounds the cell membrance and provides support to the cell.
what is a chloroplast? organelles in plant cells that trap sunlight; organelle in which photosynthesis takes place.
what is osmosis? a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentration on each side of the membrane.
what is a contractile vacuole? is a sub- cellular structure(organelle) involved in osmoregulation. it pumps excess water out of a cell and is found prominently in freshwater protists. they are found in both plant and animal cells. it pumps the water out from the cytoplasm.
what is a protozoa? a phylum or group of phyla that comprises the single-celled microscopic animals, which include amoebas, flagellates, ciliates, sporozoans, and many other forms. they are now usually treated as a number of phyla belonging to the kingson protista.
what is algae? a simple nonflowering plant of a large group that includes seaweeds and many single-celled forms. algae contains chlorophyll but lack true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue.
what are slime molds? a simple organism that consists of an acellular mass of creeping jelly-like protoplasm containg nuclei; or a mass of ameboid cells, when it reaches a certain size it forms a large number of spore cases.
what is pseudopodia? a temporary protrusion of the surface of an ameboid cell for movement and feeding.
whar are amoebas? a single-celled animal that catches food and moves about by extending fingerlike projections of protoplasm.amoebas are either free living in damp environments or parasitic
