Biology Terms

QuestionAnswer
Respiratory system group of organs working together to bring about the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the enviroment
pharynx Muscular tubelike structure located at the back of the mouth that connects the mouth with the rest of the digestive track
Trachea tubethrough which air passes from the pharynx to the lugs; windpipe
Larynx structures at the top of the trachea that contains the vocal cords
Vocal cords Elastic fold of tissue in the larynx that produces sound when exhaled air is passed by it, causing it to bibrate
Bronchus ringed tube the branches from the trachea and enters each lung
Bronchiole One of the finest branches of the brochial tubes; ends in an air sac
Lung organ of the respiratory especialized for the exchange of the gases between the blood and the atmosphere
Alveolus Air sac at the end of a bronchiole where gas exchange occurs
Inhalation action in which air is pulled into the lungs
Exhalation Action in which air is pushed into the lungs
Diaphragm Large flat muscle involved in the mechanics of breathing that lies at the bottom of the rib cage
