| Phenotype | an indiviual's observable traits. Given as a description such as blonde or brunette and lactose tolerant or lactose intolerant. |
| Genotype | Genetic Makeup Given as letters such as AA, Aa, BB, Qq, etc. |
| Allele | One of several alternative forms of a particular gene. |
| Gene | -Basic Unit of inheritence for traits. -Unit of heredity -A segment of DNA located at a particular place on a chromosome that encodes the information for the amino acid sequence of a protein and particular traits. |
| Catabolism (catabolic) | Breaks down molecules into smaller units and releases energy. Ex. Polysaccarides --> Monosaccarides |
| Anabolism (anabolic) | -uses energy to make components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids. Energy is released to synthesize molecules. -Powered by ATP |
| Metabolism | -How fast or slow you burn energy -Your body using energy -chemical reactions in living organisms to maintain life. |
| Product | an atom or molecule that is formed from reactants in a chemical reaction. |
| Substrate | atoms or molecules that are the reactants for an enzyme catalyzed chemical reaction. |
| Reactant | an atom or molecule that is used up in a chemical reaction to form a product. |
| Endergonic | ...thermodynamically unfavorable (against the 2nd law). Energy In. Requires a net input of energy from an outside source. |
| Exergonic | ...thermodynamically favorable (2nd law) Energy Out. Releases energy. |
