Planning | Determines objectives and/or desired results |
Strategic Plan | a long range plan; where you want your business to be in 3-5 years |
Tactical Plan | mid-range plans which focus on a period of one year or less. |
Operational plans | short-term objectives that help to achieve tactical plans. These routine plans also include policies, rules and regulations, and budgets for the day-to-day operation of business. |
Organizing | Deciding which objectives need to get done |
Directing | Conveying plans, assignments, and instructions to employees. |
Controlling | Compare your expected results with actual performance; Implement corrective actions when plans are not working out. |
Autocratic | Power Oriented; Managers maintain control over their whole organization. Works best in large organizations where employees are untrained, inexperienced, or involved in a crisis. |
Democratic | Achievement Oriented; Managers are open to new ideas and seek suggestions of employees |
Laissez-Faire | Managers use a ‘hands off’ approach that allows employees to make their own decisions. |
staffing | A process of hiring employees who can help run the business efficiently, attract, and increase sales. |
job description | A written statement listing duties and responsibilities of a specific job |
job specification | : A document that spells out the abilities, skills, educational level, and experience needed by an employee to perform the described job. |
recruiting | A search for people to hire to fill job positions. Potential employees can be sought within the business or from outside the business. |
screening | is the first step in the actual hiring process. It is the preliminary process of identifying and selecting those candidates who have the right job qualifications to eliminating those who do not. |
training and development | will provide employees the ability to perform their jobs well. It also provides a basis for future performance appraisal. |
Wage | a fixed amount of pay per hour of work. An employee who works in excess of 40 hours in a week is paid overtime, or 1 ½ times the regular hourly rate. Some businesses also provide overtime pay for certain days or holidays. |
Piece rate | pays a fixed amount per unit produced |
Commission | pays percentage based on sales |
Salary | a fixed amount of pay for a certain time period regardless of the number of hours the employee works during that time period |
Combiniation Pay Plan | includes a base salary plus a commission. Employees may feel more comfortable accepting a position that offers this type of payment plan because the salary provides security and the commission provides incentive and reward for productivity. |
Employee Benefits | employment rewards for service and are provided in addition to salary. These allow a business to attract and retain good employees and may contribute to maintaining positive employee morale. |
Work Place Discrimination Laws | Designed to give every employee an equal opportunity in any company. |
Equal Employment Act | Bans discrimination in hiring and termination against employees based on age, race, color, national origin, religion, or gender |
Pregnancy Discrimination Act | Requires that pregnant employees be treated like all other employees when determining benefits. |
Americans With Disabilities Act | Bans discrimination against employees based on disabilities. Businesses with 15 or more employees must accommodate the needs of employees with disabilities even if none of the current employees have a disability. |
Occupational Safety and Health Act | Requires employers to maintain safe working conditions |
Fair Labor Standards Act | : Establishes the maximum number of hours an employee can work, rates for overtime pay, and rules for children under the age of 16 who work. |
Family Medical Leave Act | Applies to businesses with more than 50 employees & Requires the employer to provide up to 3 months unpaid leave for medical conditions affecting the employee or the employee’s spouse, child, or parent including birth if employed for at least a year. |
Telecommuting | involves performing some or all of the job away from the business. The key is technology (i.e. computers, fax machines, cellular phones, and overnight delivery services). |
Flextime | allows employees to choose the work hours and days they think will be most effective. |
Performance Evaluation | a review of how well an employee does his/her job. |
