Skeletal System Consists of the bones and their associate tissues that supports, protects, and provides flexibility to the body of the humans and many other animals
Periosteum tough membrane that surrounds bone
Haversian Canals One of a network of tubes containing blood vessels and nerves that supply blood to bones
Bone Marrow Soft tissue in the cavities of bones
Cartilage Dense, fibrous connective tissue whose cells are scattered in a network of collagen fibers
Ossification Process in which cartilage is replaced by bone
Joint Place where two bones come together
Ligament Strip of tough connective tissue in a joint that surrounds bones and holds them together
Muscular System (the 3 types of muscles) System that provides movement to the body and is composed of tissues that contract when stimulated
Myosin Protein that makes up the thick filaments of a muscle cell
Actin Protein that makes up the thin filaments in a muscle cell
Tendon Tough connective tissue that joins skeletal muscle to bone
Integumentary System Protective system formed by the skin and its accessory organs
Epidermis In animals, outermost layer of skin; in plants, thin layer of root tissue that takes in water and nutrients
