platelet These help blood clot after an injury.
antigen Substances that stimulate an immune response in the body.
antibody Protiens in the blood plasma produced in reaction to antigens that react with and disable antigens.
blood pressure force that blood exerts on blood vessels.
atria two upper chambers of the mammalian heart through which blood enters.
vein large blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart.
capillary microscopic blood vessels with walls that are only one cell thick.
artery Large, thick-walled, muscular, elastic blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
pulse surge of blood through an artery that can be felt on the surface of the body
vena cava two large veins that fill the right atrium of the mammalian heart with oxygen-poor blood from the head and body.
ventricle two lower chambers of the mammalian heart.
plasma The fluid portion of blood.
red blood cell The round, disk-shaped cells in blood.
hemoglobin iron-containing protien molecule in red blood cells that binds to oxygen and carries it from the lungs to the body's cells.
white blood cell Large, nucleated blood cells that play a major role in protecting the body from foreign substances and microscopic organisms.
