DEFINE ZYGOTE? AFTER A FEMAL EGG BECOMES FERTILIZED, IT IS KNOWN AS A ZYGOTE.
DEFINE TETRAD? A four-part structure that forms during the prophase of meiosis and consists of two homologous chromosomes, each composed of two sister chromatids. ...
DEFINE OOGENESIS? The production or development of an ovum IN CONTRAST TO SPERMATOGENESIS.
DEFINE UTERINE CYCLE? The menstrual cycle.
DEFINE MENSTRUAL PHASE? the phase of the menstrual cycle during which the lining of the uterus is shed (the first day of menstrual flow is considered day 1 of the menstrual cycle)
DEFINE PROLIFERATIVE PHASE? the phase of the menstrual cycle after menstruation. Under the influence of follicle-stimulating hormone from the pituitary, the ovary produces increasing amounts of estrogen, causing the lining of the uterus to become dense and richly vascular.
DEFINE SECRETORY PHASE? the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation; the corpus luteum secretes progesterone which prepares the endometrium for the implantation of an embryo; if fertilization does not occur then menstrual flow begins
DEFINE FERTILIZATION? Fertilization is the process of combining the male gamete, or "sperm," with the female gamete, or "ovum." The product of this combination is a cell called a zygote.
