Cell structures and their functions

cell A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things
prokaryotic cell Does not have a nucleus
eukaryotic cell Has a nucleus and organelles surrounded by membranes
cell membrane Outer membrane of a cell that controls movement in and out of the cell
cell wall Outer layer of most plants and bacteria that protects and supports the cell
nucleus Directs cell activities and contains genetic material
chromosomes Contain instructions for traits & characteristics
nucleolus Contains RNA to build proteins
cytoplasm Gel-like substance that contains organelles and hereditary material
endoplasmic reticulum Moves materials around in cell
ribosomes Make proteins and is found on endoplasmic reticulum & floating throughout the cell
nuclear membrane Surrounds nucleus, is made of two layers and has openings, or nuclear pores, allow material to enter and leave nucleus
mitochondria Produces energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates
golgi bodies or apparatus Protein 'packaging plant that moves materials within and out of the cell
lysosome Digests proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal
vacuole Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal that helps plants maintain shape
chloroplast Usually found in plant cells and contains green chlorophyll it is where photosynthesis takes place
