Cells
Cell structures and their functions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cell | A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things |
| prokaryotic cell | Does not have a nucleus |
| eukaryotic cell | Has a nucleus and organelles surrounded by membranes |
| cell membrane | Outer membrane of a cell that controls movement in and out of the cell |
| cell wall | Outer layer of most plants and bacteria that protects and supports the cell |
| nucleus | Directs cell activities and contains genetic material |
| chromosomes | Contain instructions for traits & characteristics |
| nucleolus | Contains RNA to build proteins |
| cytoplasm | Gel-like substance that contains organelles and hereditary material |
| endoplasmic reticulum | Moves materials around in cell |
| ribosomes | Make proteins and is found on endoplasmic reticulum & floating throughout the cell |
| nuclear membrane | Surrounds nucleus, is made of two layers and has openings, or nuclear pores, allow material to enter and leave nucleus |
| mitochondria | Produces energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates |
| golgi bodies or apparatus | Protein 'packaging plant that moves materials within and out of the cell |
| lysosome | Digests proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal |
| vacuole | Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal that helps plants maintain shape |
| chloroplast | Usually found in plant cells and contains green chlorophyll it is where photosynthesis takes place |
