Bio Chapter 7 Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cytoskeleton | supporting network of long thin protein fibers ; provides an anchor for the organelles inside the cells |
| chromatin | DNA in the nucleus of a cell |
| nuclear membrane | separates nucleus from ctyoplasm |
| plasma membrane | controls what enters and leaves the cell |
| golgi apparatus | modifies, sorts & packages protein into sacs called vesicles |
| nucleus | distinct central organelle that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA |
| cytoplasm | environment inside the plasma membrane thats a semi-fluid material |
| ribosomes | organelles that help manufacture protein |
| endoplasmic reticulum (er) | serve as the site for protein and lipid synthesis |
| nucleolus | w/ in the nucleus ; site of ribosome production |
| chloroplast | captures light energy and converts it to chemical energy through photosynthesis |
| cilia | short ; numerous ; look like hairs ; movement |
| flagella | long ; less numerous than cilia ; look like hairs ; movement |
| centrioles | made up of microtubeles that function during cell division |
| mitochondria | energy generators ; covert fuel particles (mainly sugars) into usable energy |
| vacuole | store food, enzymes and other materials needed by a cell |
| cell wall | thick ; rigid ; mess of fibers surrounding the outside of plasma membrane protecting cell and giving it support |
| lysosomes | vesicles that contain substances that digest excess or worn-out organelles & food particles |
| microvilli | tiny hairlike folds in the plasma membrane that extend from the surface of many absorptive or secretory cells |
| chlorophyll | is the molecule that absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to synthesise carbohydrates from CO2 and water. |
| nuclear pore | a protein-lined channel in the nuclear envelope that regulates the transportation of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. |
