| Plasma | Clear, straw-colored liquid that is a complex mixture of water, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, hormones, electrolytes, and cellular wastes. |
| Red Blood Cells | Erythrocytes |
| Hemoglobin | Oxygen carrying pigment of a red blood cell |
| Erythropoietin | Hormone that controls the rate of red blood cell formation |
| Anemia | Condition caused by too few red blood cells or not enough hemoglobin |
| White Blood Cells | Leukocytes |
| Granulocytes | Leukocytes with granular cytoplasm |
| Agranulocytes | Leukocytes without cytoplasmic granules |
| Neutrophils | White blood cell that phagocytizes small particles |
| Eosinophils | White blood cell that kills parasites and helps control inflammation and allergic reactions |
| Basophils | White blood cell that releases heparin and histamine |
| Monocyte | White blood cell that phagocytizes large particles |
| Lymphocyte | White blood cell that provides immunity |
| Platelets | Thrombocytes; helps control blood loss from broken blood vessels |
| Megakaryocytes | A large cell in bone marrow that shatters, giving rise to platelets |
| Thrombopoietin | A hormone that triggers the release of platelets |
| Hemostasis | The stoppage of bleeding |
| Vasospasm | The smooth muscles in the walls of a blood vessel contract |
| Coagulation | Formation of a blood clot |
| Fibrin | Threads of protein that create a blood clot |
| Thrombus | A blood clot abnormally forming in a vessel |
| Embolus | A thrombus that has dislodged |
| Agglutination | The clumping of red blood cells |
