Phylogeny The evolutionary history of a group of organisms
Fossils The preserved remnants or impressions left by organisms that lived in the past
Homologies Similar characteristics due to shared ancestry - The more points of resemblance that two complex structures have, the less likely it is that they evolved independently (without a common origin).
Analogy Similar characteristics due to convergent evolution
Convergent Evolution (When two organisms from different evolutionary lineage experience similar environmental pressures and develop analogous structures- also known as homplasies)
Taxonomy An ordered division of organisms into categories based on similarities and differences.
Phylogenetic trees Phylogenetic trees- display species grouped into increasingly broad taxonomic categories in the order of family, order, class, phylum, kingdom and domain.
