Third Grade Plant Unit

What are the three parts of a seed? Embryo, Seed Coat, Cotyledon
What is the embryo? The baby plant.
What is the seed coat? It protects the inside of the seed.
What is the cotyledon? It is the stored nutrients and food for the embryo.
What is a tuber? An underground growth that is part of the stem of a plant.
What tuber do we eat? Potatoes
What part of a plant is the potato? Stem.
What are the two kinds of roots? Taproot and Fibrous root.
Which kind of root is a carrot? Taproot.
Which kind of root look like a bundle of strings? Fibrous root.
What are flowers for? Pollination, to make new plants.
What part of the flower makes pollen? Anther
What does the stamen do? Supports the anther.
What part of the flower protected it when it was still a bud? Sepals
What are the petals for? Attracting pollinators.
What part of the flower catches pollen? Stigma.
What part of the flower does the pollen travel down through to get to the ovary? Pistil.
What is the ovary for? It holds the egg cells
Why is pollination important? Without it there would be no new plants.
How does pollination happen? Pollen is carried form one plant to another by bees, birds, and other insects.
What does a seed need to grow? Water, the correct temperature, stored nutrients.
What happens during pollination? A grain of pollen lands on the stigma of a flower, travels down the pistil to the ovary, meets an egg cell and fertilizes it, and a new seeds grows.
What can pollinate plants? Wind, insects, birds, animals.
What does a plants life cycle begin with? A seed.
What grows around seeds to protect them? Fruit
What does the number of seeds a plant makes depend on? How many are pollinated.
What is the first thing to sprout out of a seed? The root.
What are leaves for? To collect sunlight and make food for the plant.
What part of the plant absorbs water and nutrients from the soil and also keeps the plant in the ground? Roots
What is the stem for? To support the plant and to carry food/water around the plant and waste away from the plant.
What is a root we eat? Carrot
What is a leaf we eat? Lettuce
What is a flower we eat? Broccoli
