What is keratinization? When cells are pushed from the deeper portion of the epidermis toward the surface
What is the dermis composed of? loose connective tissues
Where is the subcutaneous layer located? underneath the dermis
Where are the blood vessels within skin? dermis and subcutaneous layers
What are eccrine sweat glands? respond primarily to elevated body temperatures
What is the main function of melanocytes? Protect deeper cells from ultraviolet rays
What is the deepese cells of the epidermis? stratum basale
What glands of the skin repsond to emotional stress and begin to function at puberty? apocrine glands
What is the pigment produced in the deeper layers of the epidermis? melanocyte
What tissue acts as a heat insulating layer? adipose
What is the oily secretion of the sebaceous glands that keeps the skin waterproof? sebum
What accessory organ is responsible for goose bumps? arrector pili muscle
What are tissues? Similar cells that perform the same function.
How are tissues classfied? according to cell appearance and function
What are the characteristics of connective tissue? create fibers and cartilage, presence of extracellular matrix, closely bound together
What tissue is striated tissue and involuntary? cardiac
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue? absorption, secretion, protection
What does simple tissue mean? one layer of cells
What does stratified tissue mean? many layers of cells
