QuestionAnswer
Estimate for the age of the Big Bang 10-20 billion years ago
What are two major pieces of supporting evidence for the Big Bang? RED SHIFT: due to Doppler effect, galaxies moving away from the Earth appear red, those moving toward appear blue. More appear red. BACKGROUND RADIATION: Bell lab scientists discovered background radiation in interstellar space.
When did our solar system begin to form? 5 billion years ago
When did Earth begin to form? 4.6 billion years ago
Describe the early formation of Earth HEATING: radioactive decay and planetesimal impacts heated Earth. COOLING: Earth differentiated into a lighter outer crust made of Si, O, and light elements, and a heavy inner core composed of Fe, Ni, and other heavy elements.
Describe the formation of Earth's atmosphere Early volcanism and continued impacts from planetesimals, comets, and asteroids released water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, and other gases into the air. With the origin of photosynthetic organisms, oxygen began to accumulate as well.
What is the age of the oldest discovered rocks on Earth? 3.95 billion years old
When did significant oxygen levels begin to build up in the atmosphere? 1.5 billion years ago
What geological era saw the origin of life and what is the date range? Archean Era, 3.6-4.6 billion years ago
When did photosynthetic organisms arise? What is the oldest known photosynthetic organism? Archean Era. Cyanobacteria is predicted to be the origin of chloroplasts.
What is archaea? Domain of life containing prokaryotes. 4 branches: methanophiles, halophiles, hyperthermophiles, genus Thermoplasma.
When did eukaryotes arise and multicellular fossils show in the fossil record? Proterozoic Era, 2.5-3.6 billion years ago.
