acids forms hydrogen ions when dissolved in water and has a pH below 7
base forms hydroxide ions when dissolved in water and has a pH above 8
carbohydrates organic compounds made of carbon
monosaccharide single sugar molecule and the building blocks of carbohydrates
disaccharide double sugar - two sugar molecules (monosaccharides) joined together
polysaccharide 3 or more sugar molecules (monosaccharides) joined together
lipids nonpolar molecules that are not soluble or mostly insoluble in water - fats-phospholipids-steroids and waxes
proteins large molecule formed by linked amino-acids
amino acids building blocks of proteins
nucleic acids long chain of smaller molecules called nucleotides
nucleotides has three parts - sugar- a base and a phosphate group
DNA consists of two strands of nucleotides or that spirals around each other - hereditary information
RNA consist of a single strand of nucleotides- involved in protein synthesis
ATP single nucleotide with 2 extra energy-storing phosphate groups
