| biosphere | part of earth that is combined portions of the planet in which all life exists |
| species | group of organisms so similar that they can breed and produce fertile offspring |
| population | group of individuals that they belong to the same species and live in same area |
| community | assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area |
| ecosystem | collection of all the organisms that live in a a particular place, together with all the nonliving, or physical enviroment |
| omnivore | organism that obtains energy by eating both plants and animals |
| biome | group of ecosystems that have same climate and similar dominant communities |
| producer | org. that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce food form inorganic compounds; also called autotroph |
| consumer | org, that relies on other organisms for their energy and food supply; heterotrophs |
| herbivore | obtain energy by eating ONLY plants |
| carnivore | obtain energy form ONLY eating animals |
| detritvore | org. that feeds on plant and animal remains and other dead matter |
| biogeochemical cycle | process by which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one org. to another and fro one part of biosphere to another part |
| nitrogen fixation | process of converting nitrogen gas into ammonia |
| denitrification | conversion of nitrates into nitrogen gas |
| trophic level | a step in a food chain or food web |
| ecological pyramid | diagram that shows relative amounts of energy matter within each trophic level in a food chain or food web |
| biomass | total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level |
