Nature everything in the universe except what humans have manufactured.
Atoms Building blocks of all substances, living and nonliving.
Molecules Atoms joined together by other atoms.
Cell the smallest unit of life that can survive and reproduce on its own.
Organism an indiviual that consists of one or more cells.
Population a group of ind. of the same kind of organism, or species, living in a specified area.
Community consists of all populations of all species in a specified area.
Ecosystem A community interacting with its physical and chemical enviornment.
Biosphere encompasses all regions of Earth's crust, waters, and atmosphere in which organisms live.
Emergent Property a characteristic of a system that does not appear in any of its component parts.
Energy The capacity to do work
Nutrient a type of atom or molecule that has an essential role in growth and survival and that an organism can't make for itself
Producers acquire energy and simple raw materials from enviornmental sources and make their own food.
Photosynthesis Plants use sunlight to make sugars from CO2 and water.
Consumers obtain energy indirectly by eating producers.
Receptor a molecule or cellular structure that respomds to a specific form of stimulation, such as the energy, of light or the mechanical energy of a bite.
DNA signature molecule of life.
Homeostasis The adjustment in change of your enviorment.
Traits An ind. distinct features.
Inheritance The transmission of DNA from parents to offspring.
Reproduction mechanisms to which parents transmit DNA to offspring.
Species kind of organism, we assign it a 2 part name.
Genus group of species that share a unique set of features.
Bacteria Single-celled organism
Archaens Single-celled organism
Eukaryote Start out life with a nucleus.
Protists Simplest kind if Euaryote
Fungi decomposers that secrete enzymes that digest food outside of the body.
Plants multicellular species
Animal are multicellular consumers that ingest tissues, or juices of other organisms.
