What is a white blood cell called? Leukocyte
What is the anticipated life span of a wbc? a few hours to a few days
What are the 3 types of granular leukocytes? neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
What granular leukocyte phagocytizes bacteria, protecting the body from infection? neutrophils (they neutralize the enemy)
What granular leukocyte works to reverse the effects of histamine (watery eyes, runny nose) as well as protecting the body from parasites in the blood? Eosinophils (the end-o-sniffles)
What granular leukocyte works to promote inflammation, allowing the immune system to be more efficient? Basophils (sorry, I have nothing for this one)
What agranular leukocyte attacks invading cells, cancer cells and transplanted cells? T-cells (they are like Mr. T cells that go around beating up invaders. The A-Team of the immune system
What agranular leukocyte dwells in the plasma, generating antibodies for the immune system? B-cells (they "be" makin' antibodies)
What leukocytes are named for their habit of wandering around the blood stream killing invading cells as well as spontaneously occurring tumor cells? Natural Killer Cells
