Biology chapter one vocabulary terms

| adaptation | any inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time |
| theory | an explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations and experiments over time |
| metric system | derived numerical system of measurement whose units are based on multiples of 10 |
| scientific method | processes used by scientists to investigate the natural world through scientific explanations |
| observation | process of gathering information about events or processes in a careful, orderly way. |
| inference | logical interpretation based on prior knowledge or experience |
| hypothesis | testable scientific explanation for a set of observations |
