What are the effects of alcohol on the fetus? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome that causes mental retardation, brain damage
What are the effects of smoking on the fetus? low birth weight - baby is small because less oxygen gets to fetus
What are the effects of drugs on the fetus? the fetus is addicted to the drugs, birth defects - only 4 fingers, no foot...
What are the effects of diseases (measles, mumps) on the fetus? the fetus gets the disease
What is the tube that transports materials from the placenta to the fetus? umbilical cord
What is the function of the umbilical cord? transports oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and takes wastes (carbon dioxide) back to mother's blood stream.
In what structure does the fetus grow? uterus
Do the mother and the fetus' blood mix? NO
What materials does the mother exchange with her fetus through the placenta? nutrients, oxygen, wastes (like carbon dioxide)
