Cell Theory

| microscope | the invention that made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells |
| cell theory | theory that explains the relationship between cells and all living things. |
| Robert Hooke | one of the first people to o9bserve cells. He gave them their name. |
| Anton van Leeuwenhoek | looked at lake water and teeth scrapings. He called these organisms "animalcules" meaning "little animals". |
| Matthias Schleden | concluded that all plants are made of cells. |
| Theodor Schwann | concluded that all animals are made of cells. |
| Rudolf Virchow | conclude that all cells come from cells. |
| Magnification | how much larger an object appears. Found by multiplying the eye piece by the objective lens. |
| Resolution | the ability to distinguish the individual parts of an object. |
| Compound Microscope | uses two convex lenses and light to produce a magnified image. |
| Electron Microscopes | uses a beam of electrons to produce a magnified image. |
