Funtions of nerves
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Olfactory nerve | Smell |
| olfactory bulb | -ending of olfactory nerves - two masses of gray matter -rest at the cribriform plates |
| olfactory tract | -extend from the pack of olfactory bulbs -axons of neurons in the olfactory pathway |
| optic nerve | vision |
| optic chiasm | -two merged optic nerves that pass through the optic foramen -aids in visual spacial information processing |
| facial nerve | -facial expression -secretion of tears and saliva |
| posterior ramus | serves the muscles and skin of the posterior trunk of the body |
| anterior ramus | serves the muscles and structures of the upper and lower limbs and the skin of the lateral and anterior trunk. |
| Cervical plexus | -formed by the first four cervical nerves w/some c5 -supplies the skin and muscles of the head, neck, and superior part of the shoulders and chest. |
| Phrenic nerve | -arises from cervical plexus -stimulates the diaphragm, a major respiratory muscle, to contract |
| Brachial plexus | -c5-c8 and t1 -provides the entire nerve supply of the shoulders and upper limbs. -passes above the first rib posterior to the clavicle and then enters the axilla |
| musculocutaneous nerve | innervates the anterior arm and lateral forearm |
| radial nerve | innervates the posterior arm and forearm |
| median nerve | supplies the anterior forearm and some of the hand. |
| ulnar | innervates the medial forearm and most of the hand |
| Lumbar plexus | supplies the anterior and lateral abdominal wall, external genitals, and part of the lower limbs |
| femoral nerve | innervating the anterior and medial thigh and medial leg |
| sacral plexus | -spinal nerves L4,L5 and S1-S5 -supplies the buttocks, perineum, and lower limbs |
| sciatic nerve | -longest thickest nerve in the body -innervates most of the lower limb, except for the anterior and medial thigh |
| pudendal nerve | innervates the perineum |
| tibial nerve | -posterior skin and tibial muscles -foot -toes |
| common fibular nerve | -fibularis muscles -anterior leg and skin muscles |
| intercostal nerves | -anterior rami of spinal nerves T2–T12 -the intercostal muscles between ribs, and the muscles and skin of the thorax and abdominal wall. |
