Body Systems Review

Review of the body systems

QuestionAnswer
Define tissue. A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
Define homeostasis. The process in which the body's internal environment is kept stable regardless of changing outside conditions.
How does your body tell you that you need food? The brain sends signals to make you feel hungry.
What is a stimulus? Something that makes an organism respond with a change in behavior.
Define joint. Where two or more bones come together.
What are the three types of muscles and an example of each? Cardiac - heart Smooth - digestive tract Skeletal - connects to bones
How do skeletal muscles work together? They work in pairs for movement. One muscle contracts and pulls on the bone, the other relaxes.
How does the skin protect the body? Keep diseases and bacteria out, prevent water loss
What system is the skin a part of? Integumentary
How does the skin help regulate body temperature? Sweating cools the body off
What is the job of the stomach? A muscular organ that churns to continue mechanical digestion
Define veins. Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Define arteries. Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Define capillaries. Tiny blood vessels with thin walls that allow for exchange of materials such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and glucose.
What is the function of the respiratory system? Bring oxygen into the body and release carbon dioxide.
Define respiration The reaction between oxygen and glucose that releases energy, water and carbon dioxide
What does the nose do? Bring in air filter, warm and moisten the air
What muscle helps our bodies bring in air? The diaphragm
What is the function of the trachea (windpipe)? The tube that connects the throat to the lungs.
What is the function of the diaphragm? A muscle that contracts to pull air into the lungs and relaxes to push air out of the lungs
What is the function of the excretory system? To collect and remove wastes from the body
What is the function of the kidneys? Filters waste from the blood
Which excretory organ eliminates water through perspiration? The skin
What are the parts of the central nervous system? Brain and spinal cord.
What structures sends the signal throughout the body? Neurons or nerves
What is the function of the endocrine system? Make and release hormones
Interaction of circulatory an endocrine system Blood vessels carry hormones throughout the body
Interaction of the nervous and muscular system Your brain sends signals to make your muscles contract and relax
Interaction of the circulatory and skeletal system Blood vessels bring oxygen to bone cells
Interaction of the muscular and respiratory system Muscles around your lungs (diaphragm) help your lungs inhale
