| element | a substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. |
| atom | the smallest particle of an element that maintains all the properties of that element |
| nucleus | the center of an atom containing neutrons and protons |
| proton | positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom |
| neutron | particle in the nucleus of an atom having no charge |
| atomic number | number of protons in an atom |
| mass number | 'weight' of an atom-mostly of the nucleus |
| electron | negatively charged particle outside the nucleus of an atom |
| orbital | a region in an atom where electrons will be found |
| isotope | an atom that has the same number of protons but different amounts of neutrons |
| compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements |
| chemical bond | the attractive force that holds atoms or ions together |
| covalent bond | a bond where atoms share electrons |
| molecule | a group of atoms that are held together by chemical forces. |
| ion | an atom or radical that has gained or lost electrons and has a charge |
| ionic bond | the bond between two atoms of opposite charge |
