| natural selection | characteristic that makes an individual better suited to its environment |
| adaptations | the behaviors and physical characteristics that allow organisms to live successfully |
| niche | the role of an organism in its habitat |
| competition | the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource |
| predation | one organism kills another for food |
| symbiosis | a close relationship between two species that benefits at least ONE of the species |
| mimicry | an organism resembles a dangerous or poisonous organism to avoid being eaten |
| false coloring | coloring that tricks predators into thinking the organism is bigger than it is |
| protective covering | hard or pointe covering that protects the organism from being attacked |
| warning coloring | warns a predator that the organism is poisonous |
| camouflage | to "blend in" to the organisms environment |
| predator | organism that kills another organism for food |
| prey | organism that is killed by another organism for food |
| mutualism | a relationship in which BOTH species benefit |
| commensalism | a relationship in which ONE species benefits and the other organism is NOT harmed |
| parasitism | a relationship in which one organism lives ON or IN another organism and harms it |
| parasite | the organism that benefits from living on or in another organism |
| host | the organism that the parasite is living on or in that is harmed |
