Studying Populations

| birth rate | number of births in a population in a certain amount of time |
| carrying capacity | largest population that an area can support |
| estimate | approximation of a number |
| emigration | leaving a population |
| limiting factor | an environmental factor that causes a population to decrease |
| death rate | number of deaths in a population in a certain amount of time |
| population density | number of individuals in an area of specific size |
| direct observation | to count all of a populations members |
| sampling | to count the number of organisms in a small area and then multiply to find the number in the larger area |
| mark and recapture | to mark the organism and then at a later time count the number of organisms that are marked and unmarked |
| indirect observation | observe signs of organisms |
