Florida Biology Definitions

QuestionAnswer
Biology The study of life.
Cells Highly organized, tiny structures with thin coverings called membranes.
Reproduction The process by which organisms make more of their own kind from one generation to the next.
Metabolism The sum of all of the chemical reactions carried out in an organism.
Homeostasis The maintenance of stable internal conditions in spite of changes in the external environment.
Gene The basic unit of heredity. Genes are coded in a molecule called deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA).
Heredity The passing of traits from parent to offspring.
Mutation A change in the DNA of a gene.
DNA The material that contains the information that determines inherited characteristics.
Evolution Change in the inherited charateristics of species over generations.
Species A group of genetically similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring.
Natural Selection The process in which organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Ecology The branch of biology that studies the interactions of organsisms with one another and with the nonliving part of their environment.
Genome The complete genetic material contained in an individual.
HIV A virus that attacks and destroys the human immune system.
Cancer A growth defect in cells.
Cystic Fibrosis A fatal disorder in which a thick, sticky mucus clogs passages in many of the body's organs.
Gene Therapy The replacement of a defective gene with a normal version.
Observation The act of noting or perceiving objects or events using the senses.
Hypothesis A theory or explanation that is based on observations and that can be tested.
Prediction The expected outcome of a test, assuming the hypothesis is correct.
PH A relative measure of the hydrogen ion concentration within a solution.
Experiment A planned procedure to test a hypothesis.
Control Group A group in an experiment that receives no experimental treatment.
Independent Variable The factor that is deliberately manipulated in an experiment.
Dependent Variable In an experiment, This is the variable that is changed or determined by manipulation of one or more factors(the independent variables).
Theory A set of related hypotheses that have been tested and confirmed many times by many scientists.
