| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| carbohydrates | contain C,H, and O in a ratio of 1:2:1 (sugars, starches) (glucose, fructose, lactose, etc) |
| monosaccharide (mono means one) | single sugar molecule |
| polysacchande (poly multiple) | molecules made of many monosaccharides (glycogen, starch) |
| uses of carbohydrates | source of energy, mono. quick energy, poly. sustained energy (think starch or pasta) |
| cellulose | tough fibbrous material in plants (eg. stringy part in lettuse) |
| lipids | composed of mostly carbon and hydrogen (fats, oils) (formed from a glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids) |
| saturated (s) | all Single bonds in the fatty acids (solid at room temperature) |
| unsaturated | at least one divided bond in fatty acids (liquid at room temperature) |
| uses of lipids | energy storage, cell membranes, steroid hormones |
| nucleic acids | contain C,H,O,N and phosphorus (made up of monomers called NUCLEOTIDES) |
| nucleodies (are made up of) | 5 carbon sugar, phosphate, nitrogenous base |
| two types of nucleic acids | RNA, DNA |
| uses of nucleic acids | store and transmit genetic info, instructions for making protiens |
| proteins | contain C, H, O, N and sulfur |
| proteins are made up of | amino acids |
| hydrolysis | break apart molecules with water |
| functions of proteins | control how quickly reactions occur (enzymes), make up tissue like mones and muscle, move stuff in and out of cells, fight disease (antibodies) |
