Cells and Transport

Biology Unit test

TermDefinition
Cell Smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
Cell Membrane Controls what goes into and out of the cell
Organization Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ System → Organism
Semi-permeable (or selectively permeable) lets some things in and out but not others.
Unicelluar made of one cell
Mitochondria Produces energy in the form of ATP through cellular respiration- “Mighty mitochondria” Powerhouse of the cell
Organelle tiny structure that performs a specific function for the cell (“”elle” = small)
Diffusion movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration ,eventually resulting in even distribution
Multicellular made of more than one cell
Vacuole Structures used for storing water, food, wastes- Plant cells have one large vacuole, animal cells have a few small ones.
Tissue A group of similar cells
Active Transport Molecules move across the membrane with the use of energy Molecules move from an area of low concentration → high concentration
Prokaryotic No nucleus-Example: bacteria
Ribosomes Small, round structures- Site of protein synthesis
Organ A group of tissues working together.
Passive Transport Molecules move across the membrane without the use of energy Move from an area of high concentration → low concentration
Eukaryotic Has a nucleus- Examples : Plants, Animals, Fungi, Protists
Chloroplast Capture sun’s energy to produce food through photosynthesis. PLANT CELLS ONLY
Organ System - group of organs working together to perform a specific function (ex. Digestive system)
Osmosis Movement of water from HIGH to LOW concentration across a semipermeable membrane.
Nucleus Control center of cell- Contains genetic or heredity material (DNA)-Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane
Cell Wall Provides structure, shape, and support. PLANT CELLS ONLY
Organism the whole living thing
Facilitated Diffusion Passive transport- moves High to Low - Large or charged molecules (ions, glucose, amino acids) with the help of specific transport proteins

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
