| Alteration | A change made in a garment so that it will fit properly. |
| Bleach | A product used with detergents to remove stains, whiten, and brighten 100% cotton fabrics. |
| Bleeding Colors | A color that releases some of its dye onto other fabrics (causes fading of garments). |
| Care Label | A label attached to a garment or fabric giving the manufacturer's instructions for its care and cleaning. |
| Chlorine Bleach | Any chlorine-containing bleach that has sodium hypochlorite as the active agent, used as either a whitening and disinfecting agent in laundry or an all-purpose disinfectant with broad applications. |
| Clothing Steamer | A garment care device that uses hot water vapor to relax fabric fibers and release wrinkles without pressing against a flat surface or an ironing board. |
| Colorfast | Having colors that will not bleed or fade. |
| Country of Origin | Means the country of manufacture, production, or growth of any article of foreign origin entering the United States. |
| Detergents | Products whose job is to remove dirt from fabrics |
| Dry Clean | To clean using chemicals rather than with water and detergent. |
| Dye Free | Describes a laundry product that does not contain added dyes and may be preferred for people with sensitive skin. |
| Enzyme Presoak | A treatment used before washing to help break down protein stains such as grass, blood, and baby formula. |
| Fabric Softener | Can be liquid and used in the washing machine or dry sheets used in the dryer. Fabric softeners reduce static, make fabrics softer, and reduce wrinkling. |
| Fiber Content | The makeup of the yarn content of any given fabric (such as 60% cotton and 40% rayon). By regulation of the Federal Trade Commission, this information must be provided in all price lists. |
| Flat Drying | Drying a washed garment by first rolling the garment in a towel and pressing the water out, then laying the garment out flat on a clean, dry surface. |
| Fragrance Free | Products that do not contain synthetic or natural fragrance materials. |
| High Efficiency Detergent | HE detergent, which is low-sudsing and quick-dispersing, is specially designed to work in front-load machines and top-load machines that can run low-water wash cycles. |
| Ironing | Moving the iron back and forth over the fabric. |
| Light Duty Detergent | Detergents designed for lightly soiled items and delicate fabrics. |
| Line Drying | Hanging up washed clothes (usually on a clothesline) to dry. |

| Mildew | A fungus that grows on damp fabrics, causing stains |
| Non-Chlorine Bleach | A gentler bleach, often made with hydrogen peroxide, that can remove stains and is generally safer for colored fabrics than chlorine bleach. |
| Permanent Care Rule | Federal rules requiring manufacturers and importers to provide care instructions on garments and textile products. |
| Prewash Stain Remover | Products that help remove oily stains and heavy soil from fabrics. A laundry product specially formulated to help remove stains before washing. |
| Pressing | The process of lifting and lowering the iron onto areas of the fabric. |
| Pretreatment | Any special attention you give a garment before laundering. |
| Snag | A loop or yarn pulled out of a fabric. |
| Sorting | Grouping clothes into piles according to how you will launder them. |
| Soleplate | The bottom of your iron (the flat, hot part). |
| Stains | A spot or discoloration on a garment. |
| Textile Fiber Products Identification Act | A U.S. law requiring information about the fiber content of textile products on labels and in advertising. |
| Tumble Drying | Drying clothes in an automatic dryer |
| Unscented Product | Products that do not have a noticeable scent, yet they may contain fragrance chemicals that mask or neutralize the odors of other ingredients. |
| Water Softener | A device or substance that softens hard water by removing certain minerals. |
