biotic factor living things in an environment
abiotic factor non-living things in an environment
organism the living (biotic factor) things. An individual animal, plant or single-celled life form
population a group of individuals of the same species living together
community consists of all the populations of different species living and interacting together in the same area
ecosystem consists of all the organisms that live in a place together with their nonliving environment
biosphere part of Earth where life exists
homestasis relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain
carrying capacity the largest population an environment can support at any given time
competition occurs when two or more individuals or populations try to use the same resource
predator an organism that hunts and eats other organisms
prey an organism that is hunted and killed by another organism
symbiosis a relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with one another
mutualism a symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit
commensalism a symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other one is harmed
parasitism a symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and the other one is harmed
host a living organism on or in which a parasite lives
parasite an organism living in or on another organism in order to obtain nutrients
producer organisms that use sunlight directly to make food
autotroph an organism that can produce its own food
primary consumer organisms that eat producers
herbivores an animal that only eats plants
secondary connsumers organisms that eat primary consumers
carnivores an animal that eats meat
omnivores animals that eat both animals and plants
tertiary consumer organisms that eat secondary consumers
decomposers organisms that get energy by breaking down dead organisms
food chain series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
food web a complex network of interactions or organisms that are formed by feeding relationships within several food chains
biome a group of ecosystems that share similar climates and organisms
adaptations a change that takes place when an organism or species becomes better suited for its environment
