Chapter 3 Biology Study Guide

TermDefinition
Abiotic Factor - Physical, or non-living factors that shape an ecosystem.
Species - group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Climate - Average year-to-year conditions of the atmosphere, including temperature and precipitation in an area over a long period of time.
Weather - Day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere, including temperature, precipitation, and other factors.
Biosphere - part of the earth in which life exists, including land, water, and air, or atmosphere.
Biotic Factor - and living Factor of the environment with which an organism might interact.
Community - assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area.
Ecology - scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment
Ecosystem - all the organisms that live together with their non-living environment.
Population - group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area
Biome - group of ecosystems that share similar climate and typical organisms.
Estuary - a kind of wetland formed where a river meets the ocean. Always formed like a triangle.
The levels of ecological organization - 1. Individual 2. Population 3. Community 4. Ecosystem 5. Biome 6. Biosphere
The greenhouse effect - a natural process where greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat from the sun, keeping the planet warm enough to sustain life.
Earth's 4 major Systems - Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, and Geosphere
Examples of Abiotic Factors - water, sunlight, temperature, soil, gases, climate, and weather
Examples of Biotic Factors - plants, animals, and bacteria
Examples for the organization of ecology - 1. 1 singular Bison 2. a herd of bison 3. grasses, meadowlarks, and prairie dogs 4. the Flint Hills 5. Temperate Grasslands Biome 6. The planet earth
