3.2 Cell Features

QuestionAnswer
List the three features of cell theory. All living things are made of one or more cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in organisms All cells arise from existing cells
Why must cells be so small? They need a high surface area to volume ratio
What are some things the cell membrane does? Encloses the cell and separates the cell interior, called cytoplasm, from its surroundings
What do ribosomes do? Make proteins
What are two characteristics of prokaryotic cells? The smallest and simplest cells, no nucleus, no internal organelles
What are prokaryotic cells sometimes called? Bacteria
What is the shape of prokaryotic DNA? Circular molecule, Ring shape
Why must prokaryotic cells have a cell wall? To Provide structure and support the cell.
Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic - no Nucleus, always Unicelular - Bacteria Eukaryotic - Nucleus, sometimes Unicelular
Compare and contrast flagella and cilia. Fagella - Tail looking structure Cilia - Finger like projections
Describe the cytoskeleton, what it does, and what it is made of. It holds cells together and keeps the cell membrane from collapsing or folding. Include microtubules and microfilaments
Describe the makeup of the cell membrane. Lipids violator - Main structure Proteins - another main structure used Small mixed in amounts of carbohydrates
List the four types of proteins found in the cell membrane and what they do. Receptor proteins: recognize and bind to specific substances Cell surface marker: Identifies cell types Enzyme: assists chemical reactions inside the cell - Speed it up Transports proteins: helps substances across the cell membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
