QuestionAnswer
What are the Life Processes? There are 8 life processes that all living organisms must do in order to be considered alive
Reproduction `Making new organisms of the same species
Respiration Obtaining oxygen to combine with food to create energy
Regualtion Sensing and responding to environmental stimuli
Excretion The removal of metabolic waste
Growth Increasing the size or number of cells in an organism
Nutrition How an organism obtains its energy from its environment
Transport The movement of essential materials and wastes through an organism
Synthesis Combining two or more simple compounds to make more complex compounds
Metabolism All chemical processes that sustain life by using all 8 life processes. Organisms either build or break down materials
Homeostasis Maintenance of internal balance or a "steady state" within an organism DYNAMIC EQUALLIBRIUM
Prokaryotic The first and most primitive cells they lack a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles such as a mitochondria. Bacteria are the ONLY prokaryotes
Eukaryotic Most organisms have eukaryotic cells (ex: all plant and animal cells!) All genetic material is contained in a nucleus. They have many membrane bound organelles
Cell Membrane provides a barrier between the cell and the environment
Mitochondria where cellular respiration takes place, our energy comes from here!
Ribosomes site of protein production. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Transports materials around the cell.
Cell Wall rigid structure around the outside of plant cells to give them structure and support.
Chloroplast site of photosynthesis in plant cells, makes sugar molecules using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
Cellular transport Active and passive one moves against the concentration gradient and one moves with the gradient
Inputs and outputs of photosynthesis Light energy, CO2, and water O2 and glucose
Skeletal stores minerals, provides support, structure, and protection
Muscular aids in movement (voluntary and involuntary)
Nervous` senses and responds to the environment, allows body-wide communication
Endocrine body-wide communication to manage metabolism, growth, and reproduction
Immune protection against foreign invaders
Digestive breaks down food so it can be absorbed
Circulatory transports almost everything (hormones, wastes, oxygen, wbc’s, etc) through the body
Respiratory exchange of gases for cell respiration
Integumentary barrier between us and environment
Excretory removal of metabolic wastes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
