macromolecules
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Organic compound | The main chemical component of living organisms |
| Macromolecule | Large, complex compounds that play essential roles in the structure, function, and regulation living organisms . |
| Monomer | small, simple molecules that can chemically bond with other similar molecules to build larger, complex structures called polymers. |
| Polymer | a large substance made of many small, repeating molecular units called monomers linked together in long chains. |
| Carbohydrate | organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that serve as a primary source of energy for living organisms. |
| Monosaccharide | the simplest form of carbohydrates, commonly known as simple sugars. |
| Disaccharide | a type of sugar made when two simple sugar molecules (monosaccharides) join together. |
| Lipid | a broad group of naturally occurring organic molecules that are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. |
| Phospholipid | a major class of fats (lipids) that build the outer boundaries of all living cells. |
| Protein | a vital macronutrient made of smaller building blocks called amino acids that your body needs to grow, repair cells, and function properly |
| Amino Acid | an organic molecule that serves as a building block for proteins. |
| Enzyme | a biological molecule—almost always a protein—that acts as a catalyst to speed up specific chemical reactions in living organisms |
| Nucleic Acid | large, essential organic macromolecules that store and express genetic information in all living cells and viruses |
| Nucleotide | the basic building block of nucleic acids like DNA |
