Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Water molecules sticking to other materials. |
| Cohesion | Water sticking to other water molecules via hydrogen bonds. (Water sticking to more water) |
| Polar Molecule | A compound with one negatively charged side and one positively charged side. |
| Hydrogen Bond | The side with the hydrogen (positive charge) atoms that attracts the oxygen (negative charge) side of a different water molecule. |
| Surface Tension | A thin "skin" created by water molecules sticking together and prevents it from spreading out into a thin film, rather clumping together in droplets. |
| Capillary Action | Cohesion and Adhesion working together to be able to travel against gravity and to be able to move up a plant stem. |
| Specific Heat Capacity | The amount of heat required to change the temperature of a unit mass of a given substance by a unit amount (usually a degree). |
| Expansion Upon Freezing | Water molecules moving away from each other when freezing, causing an increase in volume and a decrease in density. |
| Universal Solvent | Water. Has this title because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid |
