Cognitive and Early Brain Development Vocabulary

| Cognitive Development | The gradual growth of a child’s ability to think, learn, remember, reason, and solve problems. |
| Cognition | The mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and understanding information. |
| Developmental Domain | A major area of child development, such as cognitive, physical, social, emotional, or language development. |
| Developmental Milestone | A skill or behavior that most children demonstrate within a general age range. |
| Problem-Solving | The process of identifying a challenge and finding a possible solution. |
| Critical Thinking | Carefully examining information, comparing possibilities, and making logical decisions. |
| Creative Thinking | Using imagination to produce original ideas, solutions, or products. |
| Reasoning | Using information and experiences to reach a conclusion. |
| Memory | The ability to store, retain, and recall information or experiences. |
| Attention Span | The length of time a child can concentrate on a person, object, or activity. |
| Sequencing | Placing objects, pictures, actions, or events in a logical order. |
| Classification | Organizing objects into groups based on shared characteristics. |
| Sorting | Separating objects according to features such as color, size, shape, texture, or function. |
| Matching | Recognizing objects, pictures, shapes, or ideas that are alike or related. |
| Patterning | Recognizing, copying, or creating a repeated arrangement, such as red-blue-red-blue. |
| Symbolic Thinking | Understanding that an object, picture, word, or action can represent something else. |
| Cause and Effect | Understanding that one event or action can make another event occur. |
| Trial and Error | Attempting different solutions until one successfully solves a problem. |
| Executive Function | Mental skills used to pay attention, remember directions, control behavior, and complete tasks. |
| Metacognition | Awareness and understanding of one’s own thinking and learning processes. |
| Jean Piaget | A developmental psychologist who proposed that children move through four stages of cognitive development. |
| Schema | A mental framework that helps a child organize and understand information. |
| Assimilation | Adding new information to an existing schema or understanding. |
| Accommodation | Changing an existing schema because new information does not fit. |
| Sensorimotor Stage actions. | Piaget’s stage from birth to approximately age two, when children learn through their senses and physical actions. |
| Object Permanence | Understanding that an object continues to exist even when it cannot be seen. |
| Preoperational Stage | Piaget’s stage from approximately ages two to seven, when children develop language, imagination, and symbolic thinking but do not yet consistently use logical reasoning. |
| Egocentrism | Difficulty understanding a situation from another person’s point of view. For example, a preschooler may assume that everyone sees and knows what the child sees and knows. |
| Centration | Focusing on only one characteristic of an object or situation while ignoring other important features. |
| Conservation | Understanding that an amount remains the same even when its appearance or arrangement changes. |
| Concrete Operational Stage | Piaget’s stage from approximately ages seven to eleven, when children begin using logical thinking with real and concrete information. |
| Formal Operational Stage | Piaget’s stage beginning around age twelve, when individuals develop abstract, hypothetical, and more complex reasoning. |
| Howard Gardner | A psychologist who proposed that intelligence consists of several different abilities instead of one. |
| Theory of Multiple Intelligences | Gardner’s theory that people demonstrate intelligence in different ways. |
| Linguistic Intelligence | The ability to use words effectively through speaking, reading, listening, or writing. |
| Logical-Mathematical Intelligence | The ability to recognize patterns, work with numbers, reason, and solve problems. |
| Spatial Intelligence | The ability to understand and mentally arrange shapes, images, spaces, and visual information. |
| Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence | The ability to use body movement and physical skills to learn or express ideas. |
| Musical Intelligence | The ability to recognize and create rhythm, pitch, melody, and musical patterns. |
| Interpersonal Intelligence | The ability to understand and interact effectively with other people. |
| Intrapersonal Intelligence | The ability to recognize and understand one’s own feelings, strengths, needs, and goals. |
| Naturalistic Intelligence | The ability to recognize, classify, and understand plants, animals, and other parts of nature. |
| Neuron | A specialized nerve cell that receives, processes, and sends information. |
| Dendrite | A branch-like part of a neuron that receives messages from other cells. |
| Axon | The long portion of a neuron that carries messages away from the cell body. |
| Synapse | The tiny space where one neuron communicates with another neuron. |
| Neural Connection | A communication pathway formed between neurons. |
| Neural Network | A group of connected neurons that work together to process information or perform a skill. |
| Neurotransmitter | A chemical messenger that carries information across a synapse. |
| Glial Cells | Cells that protect, nourish, and support neurons. |
| Myelin | A fatty covering around some axons that helps brain messages travel more quickly and efficiently. |
| Myelination | The process of forming myelin around axons. |
| Cerebrum | The largest area of the brain, responsible for thinking, memory, language, sensory processing, and voluntary movement. |
| Cerebral Cortex | The brain’s outer layer, which supports complex thinking, learning, language, and decision-making. |
| Frontal Lobe | The part of the brain associated with planning, decision-making, attention, movement, and impulse control. |
| Parietal Lobe | The part of the brain that processes touch, temperature, pain, and spatial information. |
| Temporal Lobe | The part of the brain involved in hearing, language, and memory. |
| Occipital Lobe | The part of the brain primarily responsible for processing visual information. |
| Limbic System | A group of brain structures involved in emotions, motivation, behavior, and memory. |
| Rapid Brain Development | The period during early childhood when the brain grows and forms connections at an especially fast rate. |
| Brain Wiring | An informal term describing how experiences create and strengthen neural connections. |
| Neuroplasticity | The brain’s ability to change, reorganize, and form new connections in response to experiences. |
| Synaptogenesis | The formation of new connections between neurons. |
| Synaptic Pruning | The process through which the brain removes neural connections that are rarely used and strengthens connections used frequently |
| Experience-Dependent Development | Brain development that occurs because of a child’s unique experiences, practice, and environment. |
| Experience-Expectant Development | Brain development that depends on common early experiences, such as hearing language, seeing faces, and moving through the environment. |
| Sensitive Period | A time when the brain is especially prepared to learn a particular skill |
| Stimulation | Experiences or activities that activate a child’s senses, thinking, movement, or emotions. |
| Repetition | Repeatedly experiencing or practicing a skill to strengthen neural pathways. |
| Enriched Environment | A safe and engaging setting that provides meaningful opportunities for exploration, movement, language, play, and relationships. |
| Serve-and-Return Interaction | A responsive exchange in which a child communicates through sounds, gestures, words, or actions and an adult responds appropriately. |
| Holistic Development | The understanding that cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and language development are interconnected. |
| Physical Development | Growth in the body and the development of movement and coordination. |
| Gross-Motor Skills | Movements using large muscles, such as running, jumping, climbing, and throwing. |
| Fine-Motor Skills | Movements using small muscles, especially in the hands and fingers, such as drawing or completing a puzzle. |
| Social Development | The process of learning to interact, communicate, cooperate, and form relationships with others. |
| Emotional Development | The process of recognizing, expressing, understanding, and managing emotions. |
| Self-Regulation | The ability to manage emotions, attention, impulses, and behavior. |
| Attachment | The emotional bond that develops between a child and a consistent caregiver. |
| Secure Attachment | A trusting relationship that helps a child feel safe enough to explore, play, and learn. |
| Play-Based Learning | Learning that occurs as children explore, experiment, imagine, create, and interact through play. |
| Scaffolding | Temporary guidance provided by an adult or capable peer to help a child complete a task or learn a new skill. |
| Consistency | Providing reliable routines, expectations, and responses that help children feel safe and understand what to expect. |
| Predictable Environment | A setting with dependable routines and caregiver responses that support security and learning. |
| Stress Response | The body and brain’s reaction to a challenging, frightening, or threatening situation. |
| Positive Stress | A brief and manageable stress response, such as nervousness on the first day of school, that occurs with adult support. |
| Tolerable Stress | A stronger stress response caused by a serious or temporary difficulty that can be reduced through supportive relationships. |
| Toxic Stress | Strong, frequent, or prolonged stress without adequate adult support that may interfere with healthy brain development. |
| Trauma | An emotional and physical response to a deeply frightening, harmful, or overwhelming experience. |
| Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) | Potentially traumatic experiences during childhood that may negatively affect health, learning, behavior, and development. |
| Protective Factor | A condition or support, such as a caring adult, that reduces risk and promotes healthy development. |
| Resilience | The ability to adapt, recover, and continue developing after experiencing challenges or adversity. |
| Manipulatives | Objects children can touch, move, arrange, count, or combine while learning. |
| Blocks | Open-ended learning materials that promote problem-solving, spatial awareness, creativity, coordination, and cooperation. |
| Sorting Box | Equipment that allows children to classify or match objects by shape, size, color, or another characteristic. |
| Sequence Cards | Picture cards children arrange to show the correct order of a story, routine, or process. |
| Puzzle | A learning material that promotes concentration, spatial reasoning, fine-motor development, and problem-solving. |
| Color Mixing | Combining colors to observe changes, make predictions, and explore cause and effect. |
| Open-Ended Activity | An activity that can be completed in many ways and does not have only one correct result. |
| Discovery Learning | Learning through active exploration, investigation, and experimentation. |
| Inquiry-Based Learning | Learning that begins with questions, observations, investigation, and evidence. |
| Higher-Order Thinking | Complex thinking that requires children to analyze, evaluate, predict, create, or solve problems. |
| Brain Stem | The area connecting the brain to the spinal cord that controls basic functions such as breathing, heart rate, ad sleep. |
