Neurons & Neurals Z

Neurons and Neurals Vocabulary - Bio I

QuestionAnswer
Axon where electrical impulses from the neuron travel away to be received by other neurons.
Dendrite appendages that are designed to receive communications from other cells.
Schwann Cells a type of glial cell that surrounds neurons, keeping them alive and sometimes covering them with a myelin sheath.
Myelin Sheath an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord.
Neurotransmitters a chemical substance that is released at the end of a nerve fiber by the arrival of a nerve impulse and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, causes the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fiber, a muscle fiber, or some other structure.
Cell Body the compact section of a nerve cell that contains the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
Axon Terminals small swellings that are found at the terminal ends of axons.
Node of Ranvier the gaps between the myelin insulation of Schwann cells which insulate the axon of neuron.
Secondary Messenger Second messengers are intracellular signaling molecules released by the cell in response to exposure to extracellular signaling molecules.
Synapse synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron.
Receptors transmit the actions of bound neurotransmitters.
Receptors transmit the actions of bound neurotransmitters.
Chemical signal A signal carried by molecules such as neurotransmitters between cells.
Electrical signal A change in electrical conditions across a neuron's membrane used to transmit information.
Neural signal A signal transmitted by neurons to communicate information.
Nerve impulse An electrical signal traveling through a neuron.
Sensory neuron A neuron that carries information from sensory receptors toward the central nervous system.
Afferent neuron A neuron that carries information toward the central nervous system.
Motor neuron A neuron that carries signals from the central nervous system to an effector.
Effector A muscle or gland that carries out a response to a nervous or hormonal signal.
Motor signal A signal traveling from the nervous system toward an effector.
Motor response A physical action produced by an effector in response to neural signaling.
Behavioral response An observable action or change in behavior resulting from processing of input.
Reflex A rapid, automatic response to a stimulus.
Reflex arc The neural pathway that produces a reflex response.
Neural circuit A connected group of neurons that processes information or contributes to a behavior.
Neural pathway A route followed by neural information through connected neurons or brain regions.
Neural network A larger interconnected system of neurons and circuits that processes information.
Convergent pathway A pathway in which signals from multiple neurons or sources converge onto fewer neurons.
Divergent pathway A pathway in which one neuron or signal spreads to multiple downstream neurons or circuits.
Neural branching The branching pattern that allows a neuron to communicate with multiple other cells.
Circuit activation The process of neurons in a connected circuit becoming active in response to input.
Signal integration The combining and processing of multiple neural inputs.
Information processing The detection, integration, interpretation, and use of information by the nervous system.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
