Biology Chapter 1.3 Vocab

Taxonomy The field of biology that is concerned with the theory, practice, and rules of classifying living and extinct organisms and viruses.
Domain 1. A defined region of a protein with a distinct structure and function. 2. One of the three major categories of life
Bacteria One of three domains of life; the other two are Archaea and Eukarya.
Archaea One of the three domains of life; the other two are Bacteria and Eukarya.
Eukarya One of the three domains of life; the other two are Bacteria and Archaea.
prokaryotic cells Cells that lack a membrane-enclosed nucleus and cell compartmentalization; all members of the domains Bacteria and Archaea are prokaryotic organisms.
Eukaryotic Refers to organisms having cells with internal compartments that serve various functions; includes all members of the domain Eukarya.
nucleus (plural, nuclei) 1. an organelle found in eukaryotic cells that contains most of the cell’s genetic material. 2.the region of an atom that contains protons and neutrons. 3. a group of neuronal cell bodies in the brain that are devoted to a particular function.
Supergroup One of the six subdivisions of the domain Eukarya.
binomial nomenclature The standard format for naming species. Each species has a genus name and species epithet.
