Human Evolution
Unit 3&4 VCE Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| quadrupedal | walks on four legs |
| mammal | organism that gives birth to live young, is warm-blooded and is covered in fur (eg cat, dolphin, human) |
| hominoid | members of the family Hominoidea, these organisms do not have a tail: apes, including humans |
| mtDNA | mitochondrial DNA, genetic material passed down the maternal line & therefore is not subject to recombination, used in human evolution & population studies |
| bipedal | walks on two legs |
| homo sapiens | modern day humans, only living species of the Homo genus |
| homo erectus | extinct human species from 2 mya that are believed to be the first to migrate from Africa |
| homo neanderthalensis | larger brained homo species who co-existed and interbred with homo sapiens, became extinct. DNA is present in non-African modern humans |
| homo denisovan | smaller brained & sized homo species who co-existed and interbred with homo sapiens, became extinct. DNA is present in non-African modern humans |
| primate | have opposable thumbs, 3D vision, include lemurs, monkeys, apes & humans |
| foramen magnum | large hole connecting skull to spine, its location determines whether organisms are bipedal |
| hominin | members of the hominoid group that could walk upright (bipedal) |
| australopithecus | ancestor of modern humans, classified as a hominin and therefore bipedal but does not belong to the homo genus. No fossils have been found out of Africa |
| homo habilis | extinct human species that belonged to the homo genus and was one of the first to make and use tools (its fossils have only ever been found in Africa) |
